Fiction Friday – The Wedding – A short story

This short story was originally posted in 2012.

She stood in the middle of the room, looking at the people gathered there, trying not to feel self-conscious at her own attire.

The rags of her life hung in ripped and dirty tatters around her feet. Shame crept in as she thought of the life she had led and the things she had done.

Her life had been one of disgrace and heartbreak. She had been abused, neglected, shunned, hated and despised. She had been hurt so many times by so many people, finally turning away from them and into herself.

She had walked in darkness for a while, seeking her own pleasure, solely looking out for herself….

…. Until she met Him.

She had tried to put her past behind her, to step forward in His love; but there were things that were difficult to let go, regrets that she struggled to put away.

A quiet voice swirled around her, in her. She was unaware of any words, only thoughts that spoke to her soul, reassuring her that her past was remembered no more; that she was to be clothed in righteousness from there on in.

She looked down, surprised to see that her dirty rags had been replaced by a shimmering white linen gown of such beauty and radiance that it took her breathe away.

She looked about again, seeking an explanation for the sudden change in her garments. She did not deserve such a beautiful, spotless dress. She had done too many things, seen too many things.

Once again she understood that the change was because of her love for Him, and her faithful obedience to Him since loving Him. She also understood that He was the only One that could make it so.

But could it also be because of His love for her?

She had been unloved, unlovable. Was there really someone that could love her this much?

Did He?

Suddenly He was there, in front of her, looking into her eyes with eyes so full of love and tenderness. A nail scarred hand lifted and touched the side of her face, cradling her cheek with a tenderness born of that love that He had for her.

She closed her eyes, letting His love flood her soul.

“I have loved you with an everlasting love.” His words came quietly into her heart.

“You were chosen before the foundation of the world and nothing can separate you from My love. Now, we will live and reign together, forever.”

She reached out and took His offered hand.

Her Groom, her Prince. The Only One that could change her clothing from filthy rags to the pure white robe of righteousness.
