CHRISTIANS AND SIN – Pt. 1

Do born-again Christians still sin?

I have heard much debate recently on whether born-again Christians still sin.

There are verses that say that when we are God’s children we do not sin.

Conversely, there are also numerous instances showing that Christians do not just cease to sin when they are saved.

How can both be true?

In my next few posts, I want to compare these verses and see just why they are indeed both true ……

Lets start with those verses that show that the early Christians were still capable of sinning; and, in fact, did sin to the extent that the disciples had to write letters of correction to those early churches.

In Romans 7, Paul talks about the inner conflict that the believer faces battling the sinful nature that we all fight against.  He admitted that he sometimes lost the battle against sin and did that evil which he did not want to do.

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians he directly confronts the sin within that church.  He talks about immorality defiling the church (chapter 5).  He states that immorality in the church must be judged.

In chapter 11 he talks about the Lord’s Supper and says that if we would examine and judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

In I Thessalonians 4 Paul pleaded with them for purity, to abstain from sexual immorality.

In I John, we are told that if we sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, who is Jesus Christ.  That Advocate is only available to those who have accepted Him as Savior.

Thus showing that even after we are born again, we will still sin.

So, with all these examples of sinning Christians, why do people believe that we no longer sin once we have accepted Jesus as Savior?

We’ll get to that next time.

  1. Drusilla, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). The Psalmist David said “Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me” (Psalm 51:5). But “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:19).

Thanks a lot for sharing this thought provoking post. God bless you.

  2. 1 John 1:8 calls us deceivers if we think we have no sin. I applaud your courage in discussing this topic and am curious to read future comments.

  3. I have read posts that definitely imply that a “Christian” can be sin free. I do not buy it, not possible even with Christ as our Savior.

Philippians 1:6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
If the work of Christ in us is not finished until that day, then we must still sin.

Then there is this, that we no longer sin, but it is the “old man” who does so. The “new man” does no sin.
    Ephesians 4:22-24
22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 23 to be made new in the attitude of your minds; 24 and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness.
The new man whom is spiritually minded does not sin, while the old man whom is carnally minded does sin. This I believe.

Maybe I am being silly here, but when people flat out imply that we as Christians can live a sin free life, with no explanation of our dual nature, that just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The “old man” and the “new man” are both part of me, so I still sin. If it is pointed out that our new nature does not sin but the old does, that I can believe.

Great post Dru, can’t wait to see the rest!

  4. Thanks, Drusilla. You really are demonstrating courage here… as there are many who would greatly disagree with your stance that we still sin as believers.
As I’m sure your heading to in your next post, Paul declares that our sinful nature, the old man was crucified with Christ and no longer lives, but is dead! Romans 6 – – – John just flat out says we no longer practice sin. 1 John 3:9 – –
Still, I need only monitor my life over the next couple of minutes to realize I’m constantly breaking the first and second greatest commandments… ‘Love God with my all, and my neighbor as myself.’
Looking forward to your hashing this out, friend. God bless.
