CHRISTIANS AND SIN – Pt. 1

Do born-again Christians still sin?

I have heard much debate recently on whether born-again Christians still sin.

There are verses that say that when we are God’s children we do not sin.

Conversely, there are also numerous instances showing that Christians do not just cease to sin when they are saved.

How can both be true?

In my next few posts, I want to compare these verses and see just why they are indeed both true ……

Lets start with those verses that show that the early Christians were still capable of sinning; and, in fact, did sin to the extent that the disciples had to write letters of correction to those early churches.

In Romans 7, Paul talks about the inner conflict that the believer faces battling the sinful nature that we all fight against.  He admitted that he sometimes lost the battle against sin and did that evil which he did not want to do.

In Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians he directly confronts the sin within that church.  He talks about immorality defiling the church (chapter 5).  He states that immorality in the church must be judged.

In chapter 11 he talks about the Lord’s Supper and says that if we would examine and judge ourselves, we would not be judged.

In I Thessalonians 4 Paul pleaded with them for purity, to abstain from sexual immorality.

In I John, we are told that if we sin, we have an Advocate with the Father, who is Jesus Christ.  That Advocate is only available to those who have accepted Him as Savior.

Thus showing that even after we are born again, we will still sin.

So, with all these examples of sinning Christians, why do people believe that we no longer sin once we have accepted Jesus as Savior?
